At the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah, healthcare workers are now being trained on how to quickly control severe bleeding after childbirth by using the ExAC Trainer.
Norwac (Norwegian Aid Commitee) has long collaborated with Palestinian health authorities to strengthen the skills and competence of healthcare workers. For the first time, they can now provide training on how to reduce blood loss and, thereby, the need for blood transfusions in cases of postpartum hemorrhage. This is particularly significant in resource-limited settings, where postpartum bleeding can be life-threatening.
Palestinian health authorities have recently updated their guidelines and now recommend
external aortic compression as part of the treatment for severe postpartum bleeding. This is especially important in Palestine, where the political situation often causes significant delays in transportation to hospitals. Until now, it has been challenging to provide systematic and widespread training due to the lack of a skills training model for this purpose.
Through the pilot project in Ramallah, around 40 healthcare workers were trained in external aortic compression within a single week using the ExAC Trainer.
Hadeel Masari, Head of the Women’s Health and Development Unit at the Ministry of Health, states that this was the first time healthcare workers received such training. The feedback indicates that they are eager to implement this in practice. She further adds that if more hospitals receive training and routinely use external aortic compression when needed, they expect this to help reduce the incidence of severe blood loss and the need for blood transfusions, thereby lowering the risk of complications and, in the worst cases, fatalities.
